Mortise Locks and Cylinders
Mortise lock is a lock fitting a rectangular shaped cavity in the edge of a door. A round hole in the face of the door receives a spindle to which knobs or levers are attached. If key operated, a second round hole above the first receives the cylinder(s) and thumbturn. European locks and cylinders have slimmer body and smaller deadbolt in comparison to American mortise lock, which comprises of heavy-duty deadbolt and latch. The feature common in Mortise Locks and Cylinders are anti-panic, anti-saw and anti-pry, the terms commonly used in door lock industry for safety features during emergencies. Door thickness and hardware thickness determine the cylinder length. European cylinder is normally set on top of the door handle and the American is set below. FingerTec Smart Keylock 8800 is a European Mortise Lock with 3-tongue cylinder.
