Pairing a Thermal Receipt Printer with FingerTec |
by Mr. Vincent Chan, Technical Support, FingerTec Worldwide |
Introduction |
Thermal receipt printers are widely used with POS (Point of Sales) system to print receipts for customers. It prints receipts with a technology that uses heat generated on the print head to create images on the thermal receipt paper, therefore eliminating the use of ink cartridges. In some organizations, it is required for the employees to keep paper records of their attendance as a proof of their clocking in. Sometimes employees can use these paper records to claim for free meal in the canteens, or for any other system of benefits provided by management. Now you can pair thermal receipt printers with FingerTec devices. A receipt can be printed after every clocking in done at a FingerTec device. Currently, the thoroughly tested model of thermal receipt printer that works with FingerTec is the EPSON TM-T88IV (sold in Malaysia). However the same printer model might have different configuration in different countries.

FingerTec Models that Support Thermal Receipt Printers |
We recommend using the TA100-series, 3.0” color display models (TA100C and AC100C) and 3.5” color display models (Q2i and TA200Plus). |
Activating the Printer Option in FingerTec terminals |
The printer option is disabled by default when shipping to customer. However you can enable the printer option via the FingerTec Terminal Function Tool (To download: Go to https://tips.fingertec.com > Download > Tool > FingerTec Terminal Function Tool). This tool allows you to enable/disable certain functions in all FingerTec models. |

To Connect FingerTec Terminals to the EPSON Thermal Printer TM-T88IV
FingerTec terminals connect to the EPSON thermal receipt printer TM-T88IV via the RS232 port. You will find that the printer may have a 25-pin parallel port. There will be another serial cable together with the printer package that is able to connect to this port. |
However if you receive the printer with serial port Type II as shown in the picture on the left, please contact your EPSON reseller to request to change it to the 25-pin port. |
This is the cable that should be included with your thermal printer. The end with the 25-pin port connects to the printer while the 9-pin port connects to the FingerTec terminal. Make sure the 9-pin port is a male connector, and not a female connector (as shown in the picture below). |
In case you receive a cable with a 9-pin female connector, you can easily switch it by purchasing a converter, and connecting the converter to the 9-pin female connector as shown below. |
The sample of printing format |
There are a total of 10 types of printing formats. You can select the type of printing format from the menu in the FingerTec terminals option (under Advance Option (TA100-series) or Security option (color screen)). However we recommend using any of the first 4 formats, as they are the more commonly used formats. |
Format 1 –Continuous printing format, line-by-line |
The printer will not cut the paper after printing an entry. All records will be printed on the receipt continuously. This is suitable for situations where the administrators are to check and monitor the attendance reporting process of all employees. |
Format 2 – Ticket style. |
The printer will print out an entry on the receipt and cut the printed paper once it is done. This setting is suitable for employees to keep their tickets as proof of their clocking in. |
*Employees has to select their clocking status (check in, break out, break in, check out, OT, Done) during attendance reporting. The system records and uploads this information to the software for attendance calculation. This is suitable for companies that use their own payroll/attendance software. |
Format 3 – Continuous printing format, with number indication. |
The printer will print out an entry on the receipt and cut the printed paper once it is done. This setting is suitable for employees to keep their tickets as proof of their clocking in. |
Format 4 – Ticket style but default in Spanish. |
Similar as format 2, this ticket style prints out receipts only in Spanish. |
