FingerTec® Terminals Only Accepts Linux Kernel 2.4.x USB Flash Disk |
Most of FingerTec® terminals come with USB flash disk port to ease data transfer via USB flash disk. The disk can be used to download and upload users, and download transaction logs. For installation without communication wiring, this feature is advantageous and it also can work in case of connection failure.
The technologies of USB flash disk are fast developing to support higher storage requirements (4GB, 8GB, 16GB and etc) of today’s users. While last time 1GB was popular, now 2GB is insufficient to do most of the tasks.
Recently we received feedbacks from the market that generic USB flash disk does not work with FingerTec® terminals. Upon receiving this news, we conducted tests on a few renowned USB brands locally and the findings are stated below. |

* Remark (Y) – Yes, It’s working fine, (N) – Not working at all |
We discovered that FingerTec® terminals can only work with USB flash disks that support minimum Linux Kernel 2.4.x. From the results, FingerTec® cannot work with the Kingston 4GB and 8GB USB flash disk (minimum support Linux Kernel 2.6.x or above), but working fine with Imation, Transcend and Pen Drive (minimum support Linux Kernel 2.4.x). |
Remark: The Linux Kernel is an operating system kernel used by the Linux family of the Unix-like operating systems. This is same concept when we check for Windows OS i.e. Win 2000, Windows XP SP2, Vista etc. |
Conclusion |
Currently FingerTec® terminals are running on Linux Kernel 2.4, and therefore only can support USB flash disk with Linux Kernel 2.4.x only. Any USB flash disks that support minimum Linux Kernel 2.6.x or above cannot work with FingerTec® terminals. |
Solution |
To avoid the above problem, you are required to check the minimum Linux Kernel version of your USB flash disk before you purchase it for FingerTec® terminals. This information is always printed on the packaging of the USB flash disk under System Requirements or Driver Requirements. See an example below. |
For a flash disk that supports a minimum Linux Kernel 2.4 or higher, it is compatible with FingerTec® terminals. |
For a flash disk that supports a minimum Linux Kernel 2.6 or higher, it is NOT compatible with FingerTec® terminals. |
If the information is not printed on the packaging of the USB flash disk, you check on the product web page. See an example below. |
