| Established in the sunny Republic of Suriname, Heiploeg Suriname was a small fishing company that was acquired by Dutch international shrimp importer Heiploeg International B.V in 2000. As of today, Heiploeg Suriname N.V. has over 350 employees that help operate and maintain its 12 twin-rigged otter trawls which run all year round, targeting Seabob shrimp (Xiphopenaeus kroyeri), a small white tropical shrimp that is abundant in the warm coastal waters of Suriname and Guyana. In 2011, Heiploeg Suriname was the first tropical shrimp fishery to obtain the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) certification as the first tropical shrimp fishery that promotes sustainable and well-managed fisheries. The MSC certification marked an important milestone for Heiploeg Suriname as their products now carry the MSC ecolabel trademark, identifying their origin from a sustainable source. |
